Every Second Is A Miracle

Miracles by Walt Whitman

Why, who makes much of a miracle?
As to me I know of nothing else but miracles,
Whether I walk the streets of Manhattan,
Or dart my sight over the roofs of houses toward the sky,

Or wade with naked feet along the beach just in the edge of the water,
Or stand under trees in the woods,
Or talk by day with any one I love, or sleep in the bed at night
with any one I love,
Or sit at table at dinner with the rest,
Or look at strangers opposite me riding in the car,
Or watch honey-bees busy around the hive of a summer forenoon,
Or animals feeding in the fields,
Or birds, or the wonderfulness of insects in the air,
Or the wonderfulness of the sundown, or of stars shining so quiet
and bright,
Or the exquisite delicate thin curve of the new moon in spring;
These with the rest, one and all, are to me miracles,
The whole referring, yet each distinct and in its place.

To me every hour of the light and dark is a miracle,
Every cubic inch of space is a miracle,
Every square yard of the surface of the earth is spread with the same,
Every foot of the interior swarms with the same.
To me the sea is a continual miracle,
The fishes that swim--the rocks--the motion of the waves--the
ships with men in them,
What stranger miracles are there?

For some people including me, we often say that sometimes life is unfair and what we have planned don't always come out to happen in reality. It seems that life never actually treated us right enough to make us satisfied in living the life we wanted. However, ironically, every second of our lives is what truly defines how blessed we are to be given another second to live the life we wanted. For this reason, I believe that every second may not be good, but there's something good in every second. Therefore, we should be grateful for every second we have because it happens for a reason, either as a blessing or a lesson.

This is why, me and Alice decided to compose our very own short "Or"s alternatively:

Or simply see a glimpse of joy on someone's face
Or being trap into the longest rabbit hole
Or wake up for a brand new day
Or get shrank or enlarged in one day
Or look at the wondrous view of the Eiffel Tower
Or meet new bizarre friends that are unforgettable
Or merely write the last line of our wacky poem

FYI: I forgot to mention that I actually met Alice in "real person" this Halloween. Please mind my stamped face :)

  1. Or reading classmate's blog
Or having lunch with someone you love
    Or driving alone on freeway
Or waiting for yout flight at the huge airport
    Or crying on someone's shoulder
Or letting you tears wipe by someone's hands
    And more Or...

  3. Wow - Monica. You should write more and more and more poetry! I LOVE your poem -- and thanks to Alice for writing her great lines, too. This is a model blog -- definitely an A. I truly love it.
